Blessed Are Those Who Thirst

Blessed Are Those Who Thirst
By Sherry Hartley

“On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’” John 7:37-38

Jesus longs to fill us. He is the source of blessing. He fulfills our deepest longings in life. He satisfies our soul. In these verses Jesus is inviting us to come and drink. We need to come to him and receive from him. Bring to him your thirst. Bring to him your longings. Bring to him your dry places. Bring to him your dreams, your wants and your needs. Sit in his presence and receive. He wants to come and meet with you. As you come with open hands to receive, he floods you with his peace and his rest. He wants you to receive his promises and know that he will make a way for you.

When my mother’s cancer returned to her in 1989, I was so distraught that I went to my bedroom and sobbed into my pillow in agony. My Bible lay on my nightstand and I reached for it in desperation. It opened to Philippians 4:4-5  “Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice. Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.” I stopped crying. I thought in my mind, “How can I rejoice?” But then I received the promise, “The Lord is near.” I felt his comforting words envelope me in his love. He was with me. He would walk with me through the next month of facing the reality that my mother was dying and would soon go to heaven. He was with her through those days, and he was with me through those days. He gave us the “peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Pray now: Lord Jesus, I thirst for you to satisfy the deepest longings that I bring to you in this time of fasting. I come to you and receive your presence and your promises today. My hope is in you.
