Don\'t Quit
Don’t Quit
“He told them a parable to the effect that they ought always pray and not lose heart.” Luke 18:1
On this day, September 23, in the year of our Lord 1857, Jeremiah Lanphier knelt in prayer all by himself in the upper lecture room of Old North Dutch Reform Church in New York City, New York. He had rigorously distributed handfuls of invitations to this noon time one-hour business person’s prayer meeting. For the first thirty minutes, he prayed alone. A lesser man would have quit. Then someone joined him, and then another. Within a matter of months, more than fifty thousand business people would gather everyday for an hour of prayer at noon in New York City, on their knees crying out to God for mercy and for revival. Little did they know when they began that by the end of October the nation would be shaken by a financial collapse and tens of thousands of people would fill daily noon time prayer meetings throughout New York City and in every other major city in our country.
Too many prayer meetings have given up too soon. Jeremiah Lanphier refused to give up, and just look at the impact of his perseverance. When you pray, don’t quit too soon.
Lord Jesus, I strengthen myself in You today. I link my struggling prayer life to Your persevering prayer life. By the grace of Christ, I will not lose heart. I will spend time with You alone in prayer, and I ask You to bring growing numbers of people alongside me so we can persevere together and contend for the sustained move of God in our country.
