He Breathed on Them
He Breathed on Them
“And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’“ John 20:22
When Jesus breathed on his disciples we aren’t told what kind of breath it was.
A small puff like blowing out a candle?
A mouth-wide-open exhale like performing CPR?
A lip-puckered, extended blow like inflating a balloon?
Jesus’ breath was a prophetic act. He was a great preacher who was willing to get as demonstrative as necessary in order to make his point, and his point was unforgettable— receive the Holy Spirit! Jesus wanted his disciples to get the point and to get the Spirit.
These words from the risen Christ, receive the Holy Spirit, are as alive and relevant for you and me today as they were for the disciples in their upper room. Similar to receiving CPR, Christ wants to breathe into you his Holy Spirit today.
Father God, I open my mouth, as if receiving from you mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. As Jesus breathed over his disciples, right now breathe the Holy Spirit into my lungs, into my spirit. I receive the Holy Spirit now in Jesus Christ’s name.
