The Blessing of Godly Contrition

The Blessing of Godly Contrition

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

Christ began his public ministry by declaring a sequence of eight blessings because blessing is why he came.

The second kingdom blessing Jesus announced was the blessing of godly contrition: Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Godly contrition, or godly sorrow, is more than emotional grief or physical tears. Godly sorrow flows from a much deeper place, from a broken and contrite spirit.

The reason Jesus announced a specific blessing on godly sorrow is because the only thing that can lead the human heart to this level of deep contrition is an encounter with the holiness of God.

When the prophet Isaiah encountered the holiness of God, he was moved with contrition and cried out, “woe is me for I am lost!” (Isaiah 6:5.)

If you want the blessing of a broken and contrite spirit, seek God for a fresh encounter with his holiness now.

Father God, I seek you in the white-hot fire of your holiness in Jesus name.
