Stop Getting
Stop Getting
By Jon Mitchell
Most of us, if we’re honest, spend our lives trying to “get.” We strive to get ahead. We strive to get a paycheck. We strive to get acceptance from other people. Stop spending so much time trying to “get” something and start “receiving.”
Nowhere in the Bible are we encouraged to “get” something from God, but all throughout the Bible we’re called to “receive” from God. We usually “get” something through self-effort or self-determination. There is nothing inherently wrong with that until it infiltrates our spiritual life. We cannot “get” from God through self-effort, self-will, or self-determination. We can, however, receive from God everything, in his grace, he intends for us to have.
We can receive the gift of salvation, but we cannot earn it.
We can receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, but we cannot purchase it.
We can receive the Father’s love, but we will never qualify for it.
When we are humble, obedient, and hungry we open ourselves up to receive from God. Everything we need from God is to be received like a gift. There is nothing we can ever do to qualify, earn, or be good enough to ”get” it. So, start receiving.
Pray now: Father, I’m tired of striving. There is so much noise in the world telling me I have to work for everything I get. But your invitation is to simply receive everything I need. There is a profound rest in that truth. Teach me to receive.
