The Best Gifts are Free
The Best Gifts are Free

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23
Our theme is “freely receive.” This is the ultimate reality of life. Whether it is, first, being conceived and born into this world or born of God by the power of the Holy Spirit to be given the gift of eternal life, we freely receive from God. We didn’t pay or work to be born into this world - it was “free.” We didn’t pay or work to “receive” eternal life - it was a free gift.
A wise and wonderful illustration of this is from the life of the Sanduh Sundar Signh (1889-1929), who was missionary in India. One day, Singh went into the office of a man to share Christ with him and the man began to mock him about his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. In order to demonstrate the superiority of his religion, the man showed Signh literature which he claimed gave him spiritual light. Then, in order to prove his argument, he said he had paid a great amount of money to purchase this literature and Signh doesn’t charge anything for his religion, implying that it could not be worth much, if anything at all.
In response, Singh looked around the man’s office, and pointing up to the electric lights, asked the man if he paid for the lights. The man replied that he paid a great amount of money for them. Then Singh pointed out the window and asked the man if he saw the sunlight. The man quickly responded saying he did. Singh asked if he paid any money for the sunlight, and the man, of course, said he did not. Singh then spoke to the man saying he had paid a great amount of money for his electric lights, but the greater light of the sun is freely given. In the same way, he paid a great amount of money for the literature he claimed gave him spiritual light, but, like the sunlight, the greater and true light of God that comes through the Lord Jesus Christ is freely given.
Pray now: Father, thank you for the free gift you give us. It’s nothing I could have ever afforded to purchase, but I freely receive and I’m grateful.

“Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.’” Isaiah 40:4-5
