Receiving the Holy Spirit
Receiving the Holy Spirit
By Fred Hartley, IV
“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Luke 11:13
The Holy Spirit wants to fill every Christian. Yes, every Christian has the Holy Spirit. When we are born again, we receive the Holy Spirit. The term is called regeneration. Jesus enters a person through the Holy Spirit and new life begins. But not every Christian is necessarily filled with the Holy Spirit. That's why to the church in Ephesus, Paul wrote Ephesians 5:18, “be filled with the Holy Spirit.” So, it's God's will to fill you with the Holy Spirit. It is up to us to take time to receive.
When I was a junior in high school, about 6 years after receiving Jesus into my life, I realized that I did not yield myself to the control of the Holy Spirit. I was trying to do everything on my own. I was falling flat on my face with the battle against temptation. I was reading my Bible and falling asleep. I was struggling to live out my faith with my peers. Then my youth pastor asked me, “Does the Holy Spirit have you?” He shared with me this quote I will never forget, from DL Moody that said, “The reason we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit is because we leak.” Wow, God used this in my life. That day, I opened myself to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and virtually every day since then I have been praying a similar prayer.
I want to lead you right now to be filled with the Holy Spirit. There are five steps to take in order to receive. This is not a formula, but it is a pattern. Follow these steps to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
1. Submit yourself to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Lord Jesus, I surrender my life to you. Take control of my life. You are my Savior and Lord.
2. Second, confess and renounce any and all sin. Receive the forgiveness of God.
3. Pause right now and rebuke the enemy (remember, we are not praying here, we are confronting).
Satan, I bind you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I command any spirit of, [name anything that comes to mind], of bitterness, immorality, pride, and any other demonic stronghold to be gone from me right now, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I break any Satanic bondage over me and I command any evil stronghold in my life to go to the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ. I declare my allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ alone.
4. By faith, receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. Open your hands and pray this prayer:
Heavenly Father right now I receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Saturate every area of my life, every cell in my body, with your Holy Spirit. Take control my body, take control of my mind, will, and emotions, take back all ground I have ever given over to the enemy. Holy Spirit, fill me to overflowing so that I can live a holy life and serve in the full blessing of Christ. Hallelujah. Amen.
5. Rejoice that God has kept His promise and filled you with His spirit.
Now, on a regular daily basis, you will want to continue to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Don't let a day go by when you miss an opportunity to be filled. Re-receive the infilling of God’s Spirit.
