Unlikely Faith
Unlikely Faith
Truly I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. Matthew 8:10
There are not many times in the Gospels where we find Jesus this impressed with someone’s faith.
During His earthly ministry, Jesus was a faith connoisseur with a high aptitude at recognizing someone’s faith or lack thereof. What’s surprising about Jesus’ comment on the man’s faith is not the fact that Jesus had the ability to see beneath the surface into the man’s heart; what is surprising is who the man was and who he was not!
The man was not a religious leader, but a soldier. He was not a Jew, but rather a Roman. It’s likely he was not a local, but a foreigner.
Faith is no respecter of persons. Faith comes to all whom God chooses to give it.
One secret we gain into this man’s faith is that he understood the lines of constituted authority, “I, too, am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” It is no wonder the man could say to Jesus, “Only say the word, and my servant will be healed.” Those who operate in faith operate under authority.
When Christ looks to you today, what does He see? When He looks for faith—will He see any?
Father God, build in me a faith that pleases You.
