2022 Breakthrough Fast: Day 4

The Promise of Hunger

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”
Matthew 5:6
I can still hear Armin Gesswein saying, “Plead the Promises! Plead the Promises!” He also used to say, “The only prayer that reaches the throne is the one that starts there.” Praying the promises of scripture is powerful because they are the Word of God. They come from his heart and stir our hearts with faith to pray and believe.

As parents of growing children, we noticed different levels of spiritual hunger while our kids were growing up. One child would make up love songs to Jesus before falling asleep at night and wanted to get baptized at a young age. Another showed very little desire to worship and learn about our Lord. Because of this we prayed for spiritual hunger and thirst for righteousness. Hunger and thirst are gifts from God. They are the first work of God in our hearts and so we can pray for this in the lives of those who lack desire for him. After we prayed this scripture, our child became convicted of sin and had a desire to be forgiven and soon after was baptized. All glory to God!

We want God’s desires to be our desires. He wants us to hunger and thirst for his righteousness in our lives. When we ask for this, he will give it to us because we know it is his desire for us! The same thing is true as we ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Luke 11:13 says, “How much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ASK him!”

Lord Jesus, we ask you to fill us and our loved ones with hunger for your righteousness. Give us a hunger for your Word and your truth. We ask you to fill us with your Holy Spirit that saturates our soul like a fresh spring of water. Give us the water that will become in us a spring of water welling up to eternal life! (John 4:14)

Much love,
Sherry Hartley
